The Finishing Operator is primarily responsible for performing the final finishing operations for the footwear post lasting. He/ She performs the final cleaning, polishing and brushing, tag level fixing, edge trimming and quality inspection. He/ She is responsible for ensuring the footwear meets the client specifications.
A Fleshing Operator makes use of the fleshing machine to mechanically scrape of the excessive organic material from the hide (connective tissue, fat etc.). Fleshing can be carried out prior to soaking, after liming or after pickling. The process of fleshing is called green fleshing if the removal is done prior to liming and unhairing. If fleshing is performed after liming and unhairing it is called lime fleshing. Sheep skins may be fleshed in the picked state.
Repairs different types of footwear and leather goods using hand tools. They are also employed in the footwear manufacturing unit to repair footwear damaged in manufacturing process.
The individual makes complete shoe or other footwear mainly of leather for each individual customer. Takes measurement of customer’s feet and studies design of shoe or footwear to be made. Produces a range of footwear items including shoes, boots, sandals, clogs and moccasins generally made of leather, wood, rubber, plastic, jute or other plant material. Creates ‘last'(the mould the shoe will be formed around) and uses the ‘last’ when stitching the pattern pieces together in the correct shape before fitting soles and heels to the finished product. The shoe is then stained, polished, buffed and the ‘last’ is removed.
The person may work as Shoemaker Orthopaedic responsible for making complete footwear, mainly of leather, for customers with foot or leg deformities. Able to study drawings, prepare patterns, choose materials and cut parts by hand as per patterns made. Should press and bend parts into shape, glue lining to leather parts and sew them together. Can also work as hand shoemaker. The glazing operator’s role entails glazing/polishing leather under glazing jack to enhance colour tones and a finish in different areas of leather as needed, after which the leather is ready for further use to make various leather products such as goods and garments, footwear, etc.
To perform the harness making process by cutting, assembling leather parts and other material to form harness.
The primary responsibility of the Heel Attacher and compressor is to attach heel to the sole of a shoe by machine. He/ she are responsible to ensure use of right kind of nails, screws and glue etc while attaching heel to the shoe. He/ she perform the heel attaching and compressing process as per the required manufacturing process.
Heel Builder is a multi skilled role. He / She must be capable of operating various machines involved in heel building process and produce complete heel with conformance to product specifications.
A Helper– Bottom Making provides assistance to the footwear machine operators involved in material lasting, buffing, roughing, adhesive adding etc. He/ she is required to co-ordinate with team members and is required to assist the operators to carry out activities based on the production schedule

The primary role of a Helper in the dry operations processes at a tannery is to provide assistance in various processes of preparing finished leather such as in buffing, shaving, staking, toggling etc. An operator performs these functions and an Helper assists the operator and passes the completed work onto the next stage in production. He/she must have in depth knowledge and understanding of the process of production, health and safety standards and quality parameters.
